CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Yoshichika Tsurugi
Character Canon: Luck & Logic
History: Tsurugi is a stolid young man who awakened to his powers as a 'Logicalist' when he was thirteen years old. Being one of the few able to form 'covenants' with the friendly gods and goddesses of another world (known as 'Foreigners' when they're unassociated with a human), he was recruited into the Hong Kong branch of ALCA-- an organization tasked with defending the earth (called 'Septpia' in this canon) from Foreigners who intend to do harm. During this period he formed covenants with two separate Foreigners, Rasetsu and Hibana, and was noted as having outstanding prowess with combining, or 'Trancing' with his two partners. However, an incident occurred when he was 15 that put him into a position where he wanted to save a particular Foreigner. Knowing the risks, Tsurugi and Rasetsu performed the forbidden 'Overtrance' on special permission that synced both of their personalities and powers to a dangerous degree.
The battle was won, but both parties had varying parts of their 'self' scattered. Tsurugi was able to recover everything but the core of his power that made him a 'Logicalist'; Rasetsu and Hibana's fate is unknown.
At peace with his decision and his fate, Tsurugi rejoined his father and younger sister and they moved to Naien, where Tsurugi spent the next two years playing a role that his sister calls 'Villager A'. In her eyes, he was no longer a 'Main Character', but 'Supporting Cast'-- and Tsurugi himself was content enough with his role. As he states himself, his role is no longer to defend the world, but to protect his family. While he is so jumpy that a low level alert sends him flying under the table, he is also still the person who will enter evacuation zones even while depowered to help others escape.
However, it was in the middle of an evacuation zone that he met the Foreigner, Athena. After helping him escape to safety, she presented him with the lost piece of his self that contained his powers. And, after declaring that she admired the part of Tsurugi that was willing to sacrifice everything in order to save another person, she declared herself to him and the two of them formed a covenant.
Quickly after, Tsurugi was recruited into the Naien ALCA Branch, under the strict guidance of Veronica Ananko and her superiors. Seeing his experience and talents, he was quickly appointed as the head of the local field team, and Tsurugi worked hard to both keep Naien safe and bolster his teammate's spirits. He made it a point to help them when they each had their troubles and, although there were moments when he questioned Athena's judgement in her relative disclosure of Foreigner affairs, the two were so tightly bonded that their powers formed the core that supported their team.
However, when the unpartnered Logicalist in ALCA, Olga Breakchild, formed a covenant with the dangerous Foreigner Lucifer and proceeded to use those powers to attempt to break the world in his rage, Tsurugi had no choice but to perform the forbidden Overtrance again. The fight was brutal, and Tsurugi both won the battle and saved Olga from losing himself when Olga broke out of his Overtrance, but there was little anyone could do to save the damage to Tsurugi and Athena. Athena weathered the battle with her emotions dulled; Tsurugi lost part of his long term memory and much of his short term memory.
But both of them knew what they were getting into at the outset, and promised to aid one another in finding the lost pieces of themselves before they even entered battle. Tsurugi recalled this much even with his memory fractured, and continued searching for both his and Athena's missing pieces-- much to the frustration and dismay to those involved with ALCA.
No matter the price, there is little that will stop Tsurugi from trying to help another person in need
AU History: Tsurugi came into his powers as a Glacian Frostlord when he was young, although his particular abilities as a Psychic-type was nothing of note except as a means of helping protect the group in times of crisis. Community minded and adaptable as he is, Tsurugi easily found his place in the Glacian military-- and was rightfully outraged when Reshiram attacked. Joining in the fight, Tsurugi's strength of will and determination pushed his body beyond its normal limits for the sake of rescuing someone else's pokemon -- into a state resembling Mega Evolution
What exactly happened in that fight, however, remains unknown to Tsurugi. He was gravely injured in the aftermath of the battle, and he has little memory of the actual event. What he knows for sure is that his two oldest pokemon partners went missing, and his father and sister both wanted him to take a break and stay close to home for a while.
But Tsurugi, not one to sit still, wanted to get back into the action as soon as he could. Though he was still recovering, he started trying to investigate into what happened so he could find his pokemon and keep his family safe-- and, during that time, he ran into a small Ralts who deeply admired his dedication.
Tsurugi's recklessness was starting to inspire worry in both his family and his superiors, and the people around him started insisting that he go to Union if he was going to push himself this hard. He was transferred to the Swords of the Savior under Veronica Ananko's command- with strict orders that he was not to do anything so reckless again.
Canon Personality: As the field team leader of Naien's ALCA branch, Tsurugi is the solid rock that anchors the team through multiple trials and supports each of it's members so that they can fight to the best of their abilities. Although he's had the most combat experience of anyone on the team, clocking in over 2099 hours in a Trance state when the previous team leader had only clocked approximately 300 hours, Tsurugi takes on the role of the Tank to compliment his teammates' combat prowess. The only times he steps forward to take the offensive are times when the others can't fight due to injuries or exhaustion, or at times when he knows exactly how to end the suffering with as few casualties as possible.
He is a kind, compassionate soul who adores his family, yet can be socially awkward and even clumsy at times because he is so caught up in the larger picture that he fails to notice various mundane obstacles, like tables, getting in his way. During the time when he was missing hi powers, he was able to content himself with being part of the 'supporting cast' in life, and he was glad to be able to spend time with his family. However, his sense of duty still had him running off into evacuation zones on multiple occassions in order to save anyone left behind. He also remained on such alert that he would stay up all night watching video footage of both his own and his comrades' previous battles, searching for mistakes or anything that he could have done differently that would have let him avoid his fate-- for his heart still remained with his work.
After all, it was his duty as one who could form a covenant with the divine foreigners, which he patiently explained to his younger sister; he showed no hesitation when ALCA came for his service once again.
Tsurugi's compassion on the field was what caused him to be appointed as team leader despite having two years out of service. On the battlefield, he expresses concern for both the human victims and the foreigners alike. This same compassion was what drove him to ask for permission to Overtrance in Hong Kong in the first place, and it was what drove him to save Olga Breakchild to the point of willful self-sacrifice.
In context of the narrative, Tsurugi's younger sister repeatedly makes jabs at him for being a 'stereotypical protagonist', in part because of that bent toward self-sacrifice whenever the cards are on the table. While he is aware of the danger to himself at all times, he still takes the plunge into danger without second thought. His sense of duty is a severe weakness in this respect, because he will take a shot for someone else without hesitation-- even if he knows exactly how much damage he will sustain in doing so. These decisions are never impulsive, for Tsurugi can hazard a guess as to what will happen depending on the choices he makes because of his experience in the field. His recorded numbers for his time in Trance are off the charts-- almost 88 total days spent in Trance in less than three years of time. He also understands that, do to his exceedingly quick recovery time between Trance states, he is sometimes the only one around who is actually able to do anything in a crisis.
And, like the 'stereotypical protagonist' his sister complains about him being, there is no way that Tsurugi can sit still as a crisis happens around him.
AU Deviation: Overall the deviations between Tsurugi's canon-self and his self in the game hinges on the mechanics in Brave New World. While he remains the same age that he is in canon-- approximately seventeen or eighteen-- he hasn't been in the field as a combatant of note since he was thirteen. Rather, he followed a more standard pacing for his development and started stepping into adult affairs when he was fifteen.
Along with his lack of experience is the lack of extended time between the traumatic incident in the past and the time he enters the story on stage. In canon, there is a two year interrim for him to recover and make peace-- here, it has not quite been a year since Reshiram's attack. These two facts combined mean Tsurugi will be somewhat more impulsive and less worldly than his canon incarnation. Furthermore, his sense of community would be reinforced due to how tight knit Glacian society is, as a viking-like culture that thrives in the rough climes of the ever-changing north.
However, despite his community-minded nature, Tsurugi isn't assigned to a specific 'team'. Rather, with the defensive bent of his Enlightened power-set, he takes the community itself as the thing he needs to focus on protecting.
Additionally, his history with his prior covenants with the two Foreigners, Hibana and Rasetsu, is reflected in the two pokemon from his team that went missing during the fight with Reshiram. Just like how we don't know the fates of Hibana and Rasetsu, the same will apply to these pokemon.
Canon Abilities: Tsurugi is a 'Logicalist' who has currently formed a bond with the goddess of wisdom, Athena. This 'covenant' allows the two of them to merge their forms in a 'Tranceunion'. In this state, Tsurugi primarily engages in battle as a tank for his allies, shielding them from attacks and taking damage in their stead. The cloak he wears in this form can literally transfigure into a shield, and there has been moments when he uses it as a weapon when necessary.
When Tsurugi and Athena 'Overtrance', Tsurugi gains a proper sword as well-- although he can fight with or without it if he chooses. As he has a quick recovery time between Trance states, Tsurugi often finds himself holding off enemies and stalling for time so that back up can arrive.
Besides this, Tsurugi understands enough hand-to-hand combat that he can use it in a fight. It's more practical than elegant, but practicality tends to be the most useful in a real fight.
Enlightened Abilities: Glacian Master of Battle, of the Psychic/Fighting type. His powers will predominantly be mimicking the defensive aspects of the Ralts evolutionary line with aspects of other types that feel appropriate.
He won't physically change much as he grows in power, but he will discover after receiving his Warp Band that he has an uncanny skill in syncing his awareness with his Ralts in battle.
In his First Stage, he will primarily have Endure, Heal Pulse, Magical Leaf, Barrier, Psychic, and Barrage.
In his Second Stage, he will learn Safeguard, Heal Block, Psychic, Imprison, Force Palm, and Facade.
In his Third Stage, he will learn Psycho Cut,, Stored Power, Aura Sphere, Wide Guard, Counter, and Mirror Coat.
Starter Pokémon: A Ralts, called Athena
Notes/Special Considerations: I'd like to request that Tsurugi come in with a steel-typed shield that can be transformed into a cloak for easy transport-- he'd use the shield as both a defense and a weapon if necessary.
SAMPLES
I am substituting both the first-person and third-person samples with 10 questions from the list. Tsurugi will be answering these questions as if he is doing his entry interview for the Swords of the Savior:
• What do you seek for humanity’s future?
All I really hope for is for humanity to do their best. I'd like to see us grow to be more compassionate and understanding of one another, but I also understand that you can't just change people that quickly. All we can do is try to be an example of the sort of person we want to see, and hope we get lucky enough that someone tries to follow our example.
• To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
Any length that is necessary, I suppose. I don't want to do any less than my best if there is something I can do to help someone I care about.
• What does the story of the Savior mean to you?
...I don't know if the Savior was real or not, but she sounds like a wonderful rolemodel for people to look up to. If more people had that kind of compassion, I'm sure we wouldn't have some of the same problems we have today.
• What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
Just someone who gets along with me, really! I honestly don't care if a pokemon is rare or powerful, so long as our personalities match well enough and everyone wants to work together.
• The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?
I'm not sure, to tell the truth. No one's a perfect person, not even this city's Savior. I should hope that the gods would be lenient on humanity if they decided to judge them based on my actions. I've made a lot of mistakes, but I've never gone out of my way to intentionally hurt anyone-- human or pokemon.
• A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?
The pokemon, of course. Whatever the person's reasons for attacking an innocent being, the can't be good-- and, even if I can't play mediator like some people, I can still make sure nothing else happens until someone better qualified arrives.
• You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies; upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
Well, I want to say my gut and my intuition, but that didn't do me very good before. [He laughs, embarrassed.] So, I guess it would be my experiences...not as a trainer, but as someone who grew up in the North. The weather could turn against us with barely any notice, and we always needed to stay on our toes if we wanted to make it back to town without frostbite!
• You plunge into the depths of ruins of an ancient civilization. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?
Is it wrong to say all of them? [Another laugh.] What I'm looking for is the experience of it, that's all. Finding any one of those-- or none of them-- would be just fine by me.
• When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
Bonding with it. A pokemon that rare and powerful has got to be very experienced and well travelled, and I'd want to hear what they have to say about the world and what they think of our part in it.
• In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable?
Betraying those who trust you. Though it might be possible to forgive a breach of trust in time, wounds on a person's heart aren't that quick to heal.
